The Calatrava's story is one of continuous, thoughtful evolution. Following the groundbreaking Reference 96, Patek Philippe introduced the larger Reference 570 in 1938 with a 36mm case. Soon after came Reference 565—notable as the first water-resistant Calatrava thanks to its screw-down case back—and Reference 2457 in 1949, which carried the classic dress watch aesthetic through to 1958.

Later key milestones pushed the design into new eras. In 1989, Reference 3960 was created for Patek Philippe’s 150th anniversary. Next, the 1990s saw the introduction of the Reference 5000, which featured an off-center sub-seconds display at 4:30 for a modern edge. Finally, the reference 5117 was introduced in the 2000s, with the model adding a screw-down crown and crown guards for a sportier profile.

The secret to the Calatrava's longevity is pure simplicity. Built on proportion, balance, and restraint, the design evolves without ever losing its core identity. Whether configured as a clean three-hand dress watch or housing high complications, it adapts effortlessly while maintaining unmatched elegance.

From Reference 96 in 1932 to today's models, its fundamental philosophy has remained unchanged: elegance through simplicity. That combination of timeless design, exceptional finishing and horological pedigree explains why the Calatrava has endured for more than nine decades. In my opinion, it remains one of the finest dress watches ever made and a cornerstone for any serious collection.

Our upcoming sale on Saturday 29th August features this impressive Patek Philippe Calatrava (Ref. 3601/3), dating to circa 1975. Housed in a 34mm 18ct white gold case (including the signed original Calatrava crown), it features a silvered dial with crisp baton hour markers and a date aperture at three o'clock. Powered by a signed calibre 28-255 automatic movement (serial 544935/movement 1309202), the watch is presented on an integral 18ct white gold bracelet with folding clasp (total weight 101g). It comes complete with its inner and outer box.
