Our auctions bring you a huge array of antiques, vintage items, collectables, furnishings and other items every week. Many customers imaginatively mix antiques with contemporary furnishings in their homes by buying from our various salerooms.

In particular, our Modern Interiors auction can offer excellent discounts compared to buying from standard retailers.

The auction atmosphere is unique and we make the buying process as easy as possible. You certainly don't have to be an auctions expert - in fact, most of our buyers are members of the general public. And of course, we’re always on hand with friendly advice.

We understand that the idea of buying at auction can seem daunting, but we’re sure that you will find it both enjoyable and rewarding. There’s a particular feeling of excitement and achievement in putting in that first winning bid that you’ll never forget.

Please note that our auctions run simultaneously. The starting lot numbers in each saleroom are as follows:

There is ample car parking on our premises for collection of items and during viewing days.

Viewing

Viewing in person is between 9.30am to 5pm on the day before the auction.

Absentee Bids

If you are unable to bid live online you can leave an absentee bid through our website or by completing one of the special forms which are available at our accounts office or in the salerooms. You should fill in the lot number, description and the maximum price you are prepared to pay. Please ensure that the lot number is correct and that you have given us your full address with at least one contact telephone number. We will use our best endeavours to buy the lots for you as cheaply as possible allowing for other bidders and any reserve prices. Conditions under which we accept commission absentee bids are set out on the absentee bid form. A member of our staff will be pleased to advise you of the approximate time which a lot may be sold and we recommend that you telephone us to establish whether you have been successful thereafter. Alternatively you can register for the auction on our website, visit the lot you are wanting to leave an absentee bid on and enter the maximum bid you would like us to bid on your behalf. 

 

Absentee Bids on Multiples

If you wish to bid on items offered with a multiple purchase option, only place your absentee bid on the first lot in the series. Bids on subsequent items may be invalidated if the first winner buys the remaining items.

 

Payment

You will receive an invoice via email after the auction. Please pay this invoice by online card payment or bank transfer before collecting your items.

 Packing and Postage

If you wish to have your purchased items sent by post we offer a full in-house packaging service for our Antique & Vintage Collectables and Gold, Silver, Watches, Coins & Jewellery Salerooms. If your items fit in a Jiffy bag it will cost £6 plus the cost of postage. Larger items are packed at a charge of £7 for every 10 minutes of packing time.

Please pay the amount of your auction invoice. Only then will your item(s) be packed. We will then contact you to take the postage and packing payment before shipping. Our aim is to provide this service at 'cost price'. We aim to encourage you to bid with us on a regular basis.

Terms & Conditions

 

Buyer’s Premium

A Buyer’s Premium of 27% (inclusive of VAT) will be charged on top of the hammer price for absentee bids, telephone bids and bidding in person.

When a lot is purchased online the Buyer’s premium will be replaced with the Internet Buyer’s premium of 30.3% for AJ Live. For details of the Easy Live Auction Internet Buyer’s Premium, please see Easy Live Auction's T&Cs

 

VAT

Lots are subject to VAT will have VAT applied to the hammer price. Lot descriptions will advise if lots are subject to VAT.

 

Internet Surcharge - lots purchased on the the-saleroom.com or i-bidder

Lots purchased online with ATG media (the-saleroom.com/i-bidder) may attract an additional charge.

By completing registration with the-saleroom and/or i-bidder and providing your credit/debit card details you: -

  • Authorise Arthur Johnson & Sons to charge the debit/credit card given in part or full payment for lots purchased including additional costs such as Buyer’s Premium and VAT. Any additional charges such as storage, packing and postage (if ttheir service is available) will also be charged to the card on the next working day.

 

  • Confirm that you are the card holder and have sufficient funds available to cover the cost of any online purchases with Arthur Johnson & Son
